Odyssey 2017

A Nightlong Participatory Reading of the Odyssey at Athens Concert Hall, September 23-24, 2017

 

We were thrilled with the collaboration with Megaro Musikis (Athens Concert Hall) and EllinikoTheatro as we presented a night-long, ten-hour reading of Homer's Odyssey to an incredibly warm and engaging international collection of readers.

The reading was offered under the auspices of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and was dedicated to the contemporary odyssey of refugees and displaced persons.

 

The reading took place as part of Atenista's Art Night Athens, a series of cultural events presented overnight from Sept. 23 to Sept. 24. We were honored to mark the Year of Nikos Kazantzakis through use of his retranslation of the Odyssey. The English language translation was by Stanley Lombardo.

What an amazing night! To be reading the Odyssey all together and feel the magic of poetry in all its grandeur! So many different readings, so many different languages in one reading! It was like participating in an old ritual, in a mystical ceremony ... and we, in our "own" language, a language of gestures, the Greek Sign Language, had the opportunity to render and describe the mythical images of the hero Odysseus, thus showing the beauty of our language ... A valuable and important initiative. We are fans of your work and your eternal supporters!"
